So what's up with Vitamin Pricing? How do Retailers come up with Suggested Retail? Why are there so many price variations? Can't anyone do anything about this? The answer is YES and here is how:  First a couple of things. Almost every retailer has what is called a loss leader. That means they price one or two items that are a necessity or are a popular item at their cost, with no mark up, therefore it is a loss to them as they make no money. Some will even price below retail on those one or two items. The reason is the benefits. The hope is that the person will then come into the store, shop more, and they can then help more people become healthy or stay healthy. This is perfectly legal.

       Next, you hear this all the time, Big chain stores vs "mom and Pop". The bigger the store often equals a bigger "Bankroll". This enables them to purchase  from their vendors in "Bulk" often getting bigger discounts which they then in turn, pass on to their customers. Again perfectly legal. The obvious issue is that smaller stores can't afford to order as much in bulk therefore they can't mark their prices down as much as big chain stores as they do not get the same discounts. That is just life folks! 

       Last preface: The mindset that if it is more expensive it should be better and the opposite if it only cost a dollar it is probably cheap and not worth much. Now to the heart of the matter: When it comes to your health and supplements, Honest Supplement Companies and other organizations with integretity and the belief that Customer Care comes first, have decided on a program that levels the playing fields and puts the focus back on customer care instead of just turning over product. (for those into this field for profits only), FINALLY!!!

       Over the past decades a policy has been implemented called M.A.P.S This means that certain supplement manufacturers have decided that All of their supplements NO MATTER where sold (In big chain stores or mom & pop stores, MUST sell their products at "Suggested Retail", which is given to all retailers when they order product from these particular supplement companies. If they find out a Retailer is not obeying this policy, then they will refuse to do business with them.

       The effort is to stop confusing customers or worse yet, for some unsavvy retailers who actually jack up their prices on popular selling products such as weight-loss or muscle building products on unsuspecting customers, to put an end to all this. It also helps put a stop on price wars where retailers will undercut each other to get people's business, often to the determent of having to close their own doors for lack of funding to continue operating their stores because the focus became about money and not on customers and their health needs.

       So why are there still price differences? And how can you the consumer tell what the suggested retail should be? I'll start with the first question. Under the M.A.P.S Policy, all supplements from participating supplement companies MUST be marked at SUGGESTED RETAIL Prices. HOWEVER any store may run any sale at anytime on those products. The point is that when items are not on sale, that everyone walking in and looking at REGULAR pricing sees their supplements the same prices in all locations. Also, stores are still allowed to have loss leaders. They should also be getting the OK from the vendor. Other reasons for the price differences is an obvious one, Not everyone plays by the "rules". Different stores run different sales, and also - NOT all supplement companies are part of this program, and so on...

       Now for the second question. If the retailer is honest, they will be open about the suggested retail prices. If you want to know and do your own research on what the real suggested retail pricing is you can go to the manufacturer's website or call them.
